Kidz Klub started around 2001 at All Saints' Church, Canterbury. In October 2004 with the support of eight churches, Canterbury Kidz Klub went City-wide. A Board of Trustees was set up representing six of the churches and charitable status was granted by the Charity Commissioners on 28th December 2006.
The idea for Kidz Klub originated in Brooklyn, New York, USA. It started in 1980 and now serves 20,000 children per week across 150 sites in New York city. Bill Wilson, it's founder, was himself abandoned as a child and rescued by a Christian after waiting for three days for his mother to return. His Metro Ministries church was founded in a tough area of Brooklyn and he was beaten, stabbed and shot in the face. For more information visit www.metroministries.org.
The Kidz Klub idea came to the UK in 1993 when a group from Frontline church in Liverpool visited Metro Ministries in Brooklyn. Now there are several Kidz Klubs around the country.
